THE ASUNTA STORY... The Asunta series is a collection of multiple dragon fruit types developed by Edgar Valdivia, a fruit breeder in Southern California. Mr. Valdivia crossed several dragon fruit species and was also successful in hybridizing Selenicereus undatus, a dragon fruit species, with an Epiphyllum species, an ornamental cactus that belongs to the same family as dragon fruit and bears showy blooms. There are over Seven Asunta types within the series, each with a different breeding history. Mr. Valdivia has been breeding Asunta-type dragon fruits for over twenty six years and freely shares cuttings with other growers to create improved varieties. He is also a member of the California Rare Fruit Growers, a non-profit organization connecting amateur and professional fruit growers. Create a Dragonfruit Offspring Hybrid that flowers in the Daytime rather than the traditional Moon Flower Experience at night The Release into the Wild.. Three dragon fruit seedlings were given by Mr. Valdivia to Gray Martin, a fellow breeder and horticulturist in Southern California.
Mr. Martin allowed the seedlings to mature, and it is said that cuttings from these seedlings were later given to a neighbor. The neighbor shared the plants with other growers, contributing to the rise and spread of the variety that became known as Ax.
