La Verne Red Dragon Fruit is a hybrid variety that comes from the genus Selenicereus and the species Guatemalensis and another unknown species. It is named after the nursery, where it is grown commercially and sold as plants in Southern California. The growth of this variety is very typical of most Selenicereus guatemalensis species with minimal spines. Once the growth matures, you can identify this variety as segments begin to twist. This is unlike any other Guatemalan species.
Flowers of La Verene Red are typical of most Guatemalan species. Flower buds and flowers are more significant than usual Guatemalan species and blooms measure around 15 inches when fully open. From flower bud to flower took 21 days.
La Verne Red Dragon Fruits are very appealing visually. Like the twisted stems, the fruit has longer than typical fins the tend to give a wavy appearance. Flower to fruit is 30 days weighing a pound. Fruits are also oval, where most Guatemalan species are round in shape. The exterior has long green fins with red skin where it gets its name. The flesh is bright purple, with lots of small crunchy seeds having a melon grape flavor.
