The fruit is oval-shaped, covered in scales, and has red-purple flesh with small black seeds. 
The plant can tolerate temperatures up to 40 °C (104 °F) and short periods of frost.
It thrives in USDA zones 10–11 but may survive outdoors in zone 9a or 9b.
The plant has adapted to live in dry tropical climates with a moderate amount of rain.
